Greece once again gripped by heatwave

Greek authorities were on Monday preparing to deal with the repercussions of yet another major heatwave that is sweeping the country, with temperatures in some areas expected to reach up to 44C.

Tuesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week but temperatures will remain steadily above 40C throughout the country until Thursday.

The highest temperatures are expected in Larisa, Argos, Corinth, Trikala, Thessaloniki, Drama, Kavala, Serres and Katerini.

The Civil Protection General Secretariat has alerted all state services and local authorities to be prepared to deal with incidents linked to the high temperatures and set in motion the health ministry's Perseus plan, in which hospitals and the ambulance service are on standby.

The Public Power Corporation (PPC) is also on red alert as power consumption is once again expected to peak and test the limits of the power grid.

Greece: Wild Fires Destroy Forests in Greece
Posted on Monday, July 02 @ 18:04:54 EDT by greek_news

GreeceAthens.- Wildfires swept through Greece on Thursday and Friday , killing two people and destroying homes after days of record temperatures of more than 100 degrees that led to at least nine heatstroke deaths and extensive power cuts.

Authorities evacuated a mountain hotel and casino complex, an air force radar station and a children's camp on the outskirts of Athens as a huge forest fire raged out of control through the Mount Parnitha national park.

Of the total 50 fires that broke out in the last 24 hours, 44 have been brought under full control while the other six, in Ialissos Rhodes, Oinousses Hios, Koroneia Thessaloniki, Bourbourou Halkidiki, Hrisokelaria Messinias and Kantano Hania are under partial control according to a Fire Department announcement. Also the fires in Derbenohoria, Parnitha and Neohori Magnisias –where firefighters are continuing battling blazes from land and air- are showing signs of reduction.

From Kavala, the President fo the Republic made a dramatic appeal for protection of the environment. The Prime-minister who visited the Fire Department Operation Center yesterday called all to be on the alert while he thanked firefighters, who at critical hours they fight with all their forces. In an interview with NET 105.8, Economics undersecretary, Hristos Folias apart from extreme temperatures clearly suggested arson and people with economic interests who want to exploit the burned lands as a cause of the large number of fires.

A new meeting, chaired by prime-minister, Kostas Karamanlis, was held at the Maximos mansion Saturday to estimate the situation in the fire fronts. The fire on the Parnitha front is rekindling said Public Order Minister, Vyron Polidoras, adding that after yesterday’s battle against the 2 or 3 fronts they are under partial control.

Civil Protection Secretariat calls on citizens to avoid activities in the country which could ignite a fire such as burning of dry branches, use of electrical devices causing sparks and drop of lit cigarettes and particularly avoid to light a fire for any reason and obey to signs prohibiting access to regions of high risk of fire. To immediately dial 199 if they discover a fire and to leave the region if they can not assist in efforts to contain the fire at initiation stage for their safety and to facilitate firefighters who will be arriving.

In the meantime, Fire Department officers are considering possible arson in the Derbenohoria fire which spread to Mt. Parnitha while it is also investigating possible arsons as cause of other fires. In parallel, two Prosecutors have been appointed to supervise the Fire Department’s interrogations on the causes of fires in Attika. The country’s state and political leadership are highly concerned on the unprecedented large number of fires that broke out in the last days as well as the catastrophe they caused.

The president of PASOK party, George Papandreou accused the government of lack of coordination and delay and spoke of a huge environmental damage on Mt Parnitha. In her speech in Heraklio, GCP general secretary, Aleca Papariga – who visited Parnitha- spoke of a crime. She among others said that all the region up to Tatoi should be defined as National park in order to effectively protect it. Certainly, she said merely its declaration as national Park is not enough but consists a base for prevention and forest protection. SYN party president, Alecos Alavanos blamed the two large political parties for lack of political prevention policy while LAOS president, Giorgos Karatzaferis spoke of inexistent state mechanism.

Med grape supply takes a beating

Soaring temperatures in Greece are playing havoc with the early grape crop.

“Temperatures have reached 47°C,” said Mimi Spiliopoulou, commercial and technical director of M&CP Premium Fresh Produce Ltd. “About 25 per cent of the Thompson Seedless production has been lost so far and the crops are looking terrible, with a lot of brown berries because of the heat. I estimate that there will be a loss of about 35 per cent in total.”

Spiliopoulou said conditions are worse on higher ground in the mountains, and that damage is less lower down. “The heat is also affecting the size of the berries and sizes are small as they are very stressed,” she said.

Corinth and Crete are harder hit than production in Kavala further north. “The harvest in Kavala is not due to start until mid-September, but in Corinth it is around August 11 and in Crete July 26,” said Spiliopoulou.

There is little that growers can do to try and protect their fruit from the searing heat. “The only thing we can do is put water on the plants during the night,” Spiliopoulou said. “That is to help the plants, as there is not really anything we can do for the fruit.”

There is likely to be a considerable impact on exports. “We would normally have some 250,000 tonnes from both Corinth and Crete, but the majority of the fruit will not have good quality or sizing,” said Spiliopoulou. “And everybody knows that in these cases growers will be looking to raise prices.”

Grape production in the Spanish region of Murcia has also been hit by the weather, with heavy rain and lower-than-average temperatures in the spring delaying the season by 10 days and triggering a drop in volumes.

Supply is expected to be some 30 to 40 per cent down on the 2006 season, with the possibility of a 50 per cent drop being the worst-case scenario in areas that were worst affected.

“Production was sensitive to the rains and cooler spring conditions,” Enrique Bastarreche, co-ordinator for grower trade association Asociación Apirenas, told FPJ. “The weather was not ideal in Holy Week, but some areas were hit worse than others.”

President Papoulias appeals for environmental protection

Papoulias appeals for environmental protection

President of the Republic Karolos Papoulias on Friday issued a dramatic appeal for better protection of the environment, speaking in Kavala where he was due to take part in celebrations of the feast day of the city's patron saint, the Apostle Paul, and events marking the 94th anniversary of the city's liberation on June 29, 1913.

Speaking at a ceremony during which he was declared an honourary citizen of Kavala, Papoulias referred to the major wildires that have erupted in many parts of the country, including Attica prefecture (in the greater Athens area).

"Yesterday I saw the Attica sky turn dark from the conflagration, and my heart bled. It was one of those moments that makes the human brain stop. Where are we headed? What kind of a world are we creating? What will we leave behind us?. There is no time for complacency. Environmental protection must be our number one priority," he said.

Papoulias said that each and every citizen, individually and collectively, "must join forces to demand respect of nature, even if this affects smaller or large interests, even if this displeases some".
